Hall of Athletic Honor
Although his athletic career at Gettysburg was cut short when he became the first student at the school to be drafted during World War II, he accomplished in two varsity seasons what many athletes do not in three or four. As a sophomore fullback, he scored the winning touchdowns in his first two games against Bucknell and Albright, and followed that up with a four-touchdown performance against Drexel. By the end of the basketball season he had become a starter at one of the forward positions, and his baseball numbers included a .350 batting average and three home runs.
The Associated Press made him an honorable mention Little All-American in football after his junior season, during which he averaged more than seven yards per carry.
He was awarded the Bronze Star during the war and, after his discharge in 1945, returned to Gettysburg to complete his degree. He played professional football in York before returning to his Alma Mater in 1957 to serve in many capacities, including head football coach and interim athletic director.
