Hall of Athletic Honor
A native of Lemasters, Pa., he entered Gettysburg in 1929 and immediately distinguished himself on the football field and the wrestling mats. He broke into the football team's starting lineup as a sophomore, playing right guard for three varsity years. At the time, "Bull" was the biggest man on the team at 182-pounds.
His two-way performance played a key role in two winning seasons. Two of his biggest saves were a 3-0 win over Villanova and a 7-2 win over Ursinus. He was singled out for his "brilliant" line play in both games. His play, particularly on defense, was highly visible and publicized. Because of his consistency as a lineman, he was selected to play for the North team in one of the very first North-South Shrine games in 1932.
Wrestling was just beginning at Gettysburg when he tried out for the team. He wrestled at 175-pounds and posted a 4-1 record in 1931. Two of his victories were by falls.
