Hall of Athletic Honor
As the head swimming coach at Gettysburg College for over three decades, Mike Rawleigh set a standard of success that will be nearly impossible to duplicate.
Â
The former University of North Carolina swimmer and assistant coach inherited strong men’s and women’s programs when he arrived on campus in 1985. Rawleigh took the Bullets even higher with an annual string of conference titles and NCAA appearances. From 1986 to 2000, Gettysburg’s women won 15-straight conference titles and the men won 10-straight from 1990 to 1999. In total, the two programs won 42 Middle Atlantic Conference and Centennial Conference titles during Rawleigh’s 34 years, which accounts for one-quarter of all the conference crowns won by teams at Gettysburg.
Â
Individually, Rawleigh guided the Bullets to 334 conference titles in individual and relay events. On the national stage, he coached his student-athletes to 118 All-America finishes, including a pair of national titles by Lynne Cassidy ’92 in the 500 free in 1990 and 1991.
Â
Rawleigh recorded 548 dual-meet victories during his tenure and won more than 83 percent of his competitions. He was named CC Coach of the Year a total of six times. In 2020, Rawleigh was honored with the Richard E. Steadman Award, which recognizes a coach who has done the most to spread happiness in the sport of swimming, by the CSCAA.
A native of High Point, N.C., Rawleigh graduated from North Carolina in 1975 with a degree in history.
