Despite trying out for the Gettysburg baseball team as an infielder - and never throwing a single pitch in high school - Cox impressed Head Coach Ira Plank with his control and soon became a staple on the Bullet mound, a position he would hold for the next four years.

On May 6, 1939, he fired five scoreless innings of relief against Bucknell to help the Bullets turn an 8-2 deficit into a 10-8 win, thus notching his first collegiate victory.

As a sophomore, he worked all 10 innings in a 2-1 win over Penn State, and in 1941 he again stopped Bucknell, 6-2, allowing the Bullets to clinch the championship of the Eastern Pennsylvania Intercollegiate League. As a senior in 1942, he led the baseball team to a 7-2 record, finishing his collegiate career with a two-hit shutout over Dickinson. Following the season, the College's alumni magazine described the pitching combination of Cox and Russ Aungst as "the best one-two punch" Plank had managed in over a quarter century.

In addition to his baseball achievements, he was also a four-year starter and letterwinner with the men's soccer team, assuming the captain's role in 1941. For his two-sport prowess, he earned the 1942 Charles W. Beachem Award.

A native of Malvern, Pa., he graduated from Gettysburg in 1942 with a degree in business administration.
