He placed ninth in that meet his sophomore year, was third in 25:21 as a junior and won the conference's individual title his senior year. He competed in two NCAA championships, placing as high as 54th in 1975. He also placed 21st in the IC4A championships, being named to the All-East team.

He won two conference indoor track titles in the mile run, turning in a 4:24 as a sophomore.

He was a gifted distance runner who moved from the mile, two and three mile runs to the 3,000-meter steeplechase as a senior. He became so proficient in the steeplechase that he not only won every event his senior year, but went on to become an All-America in the event. He placed fifth in the NCAA championships with a time of 9:11.6, a record which withstood the test of time.

He received a degree in Health and Physical Education.
