Whether driving to the goal or carrying a screen pass into the end zone, Howell was a one-of-a-kind offensive threat. Versatile and athletic, he led the Gettysburg men's lacrosse team to its first-ever conference championship and also thrived as an invaluable component of the football squad's record-setting wishbone offense.

As a midfielder with the lacrosse team, Howell proved to be one of that program's very first offensive stars. After leading the Bullets with 20 goals as a sophomore in 1975, he helped Gettysburg secure its first-ever Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championship the following season, scoring a game-high four goals in an 11-10 title-clinching win over Franklin & Marshall.

He enjoyed his greatest personal success in 1977, leading the team in goals (30) and points (47) while being named as an All-America honorable mention, the first player in program history to earn All-America recognition. Also a two-time All-MAC choice, he concluded his lacrosse career at the prestigious North/South Senior All-Star Game.

On the gridiron, Howell was a triple threat in the Bullets' wishbone attack, scoring 15 touchdowns in three seasons from his halfback position and compiling nearly 800 yards from scrimmage as a senior in 1976.

A native of Huntington, N.Y., he graduated from Gettysburg in 1977 with a degree in business administration.
